Asphalt pavement joints as one of the weakest parts of every asphalt pavement require more attention when constructed to avoid short lifespan of the pavements. They are formed during construction of new roads, filling utility cuts and repair of deteriorated pavements. In many cases, road deteriorations occur due to both environmental effects and traffic loading and often start from poorly constructed joints lowering service life of the roads significantly. Despite of their importance, there are no standardized performance-based evaluating tools for their evaluations.
Recently, the applicants have successfully demonstrated in a study (2013) the possibility of using performance-based tests to make a quality ranking among different joints. The results of this study suggested that not only one but also a combination of the parameters e.g. shape, treatment and compaction techniques can have a significant impact on the performance of the joints. To fundamentally understand the joint compaction phase, a simple laboratory scale compaction simulator with respect to the particle flow during compaction (Compaction Flow Test) (2015) was developed and the structural rearrangements of different asphalt mixtures under the compaction forces for different asphalt layer thicknesses (2015) were studied.
All of these previous studies will be used as a basis for further study to develop effective construction and evaluating methods for improving asphalt joints.
Sammanfattning
Asphalt pavement joints as one of the weakest parts of every asphalt pavement. Despite of their importance, there are no standardized evaluating tools for their evaluations. This project focuses on the validation and further development of the achieved results from the applicants’ recent study on asphalt joints with the collaboration of contracting companies. In this research, mechanisms of the joint failures as a function of unfavorable traffic loading and environmental conditions are explored to find representative evaluating methods as well as construction techniques and alternative materials to counteract premature pavement joints failures.
Förväntat resultat
• Recommendations on the most efficient construction techniques for achieving improved quality of the joints (regarding action of water, mechanical loading, temperature changes etc.)
• New test method(s) and methodology to evaluate performance and quality of asphalt joints for optimized construction and maintenance actions, also providing a basis for implementation within standards and quality control by road owners.
Plan för resultatspridning och implementering
The expected promising results of this project will be communicated and implemented continuously during the project, in cooperation with contractors such as Skanska, Peab, Atlas Copco..
Firstly, the achievements of the our recent study on asphalt joints are communicated with contractors and possibilities of using them for field specimens as well as making any further practical adjustments are discussed.
Then, at each step of the project, the results of the research are communicated and discussed with contractors for implementation in under construction road sections.
